Week in Review (August 8–14, 2025)

Series vs. Philadelphia Phillies (Home)

Friday, Aug 8: Rangers fell 9–1 in a rough opening game.

Saturday, Aug 9: Lost another tight one, 3–2, despite Jacob deGrom delivering a solid start. Max Kepler’s seventh-inning two-run double for Philadelphia proved decisive.

Sunday, Aug 10: Rangers were swept in the series via a 4–2 loss. Edmundo Sosa homered to tie it; Phillies seized control in the middle innings.

Series vs. Arizona Diamondbacks (Home)

Monday, Aug 11: Rangers rebounded with a 7–6 win, avoiding a four-game skid. This would turn out to be their only win this week.

Tuesday, Aug 12: Arizona outdueled Texas 3–2 in a pitcher’s duel.

Wednesday, Aug 13: Diamondbacks mounted a furious ninth-inning comeback, winning 6–4. James McCann and Ketel Marte homered with two outs to pull off the rally. Ketel Marte’s solo shot on Tuesday also sealed that comeback victory.

Summary:

Overall record this week: 1 win, 5 losses

The Rangers were swept by the Phillies and dropped two of three to the Diamondbacks.

Offensive struggles and bullpen vulnerabilities—especially in high-leverage moments like ninth innings—have been costly.

Bright spots: The comeback win Monday offered a glimmer of fight; deGrom pitched well despite limited run support.

Playoff Picture Heading into the Weekend

Standings Snapshot

AL West Division (as of August 14):

Houston Astros – 68-53

Seattle Mariners – 67-54 (1 game back)

Los Angeles Angels – 59-63 (9.5 games back)

A’s – 55-69 (19 games back)

American League Wild Card Race:

The Rangers sit in the 5th Wild Card spot at 61-61, trailing the Cleveland Guardians by 3.5 games (Guardians at 63-57). Wild card standings order: Mariners, Red Sox, Yankees, Guardians, and then the Rangers.

Summary

The Rangers are .500 on the season and well behind in the division. They’re also trailing markedly in the wild card chase—with Cleveland holding clear advantage. Unless a significant turnaround occurs, playoff hopes are slipping fast. The wild card is probably the only realistic chance the Rangers have of making the playoffs this year. This week manager, Bruce Bochy, reminded everyone that several years ago they lost a number of games at this point in the season and still went on to win the World Series. So, if you’re looking for hope, there you have it!

How crazy is it that the Rangers have the top pitching staff in the entire league, or at least one of the top, but their offense has been what’s holding them back? Do you feel like you’re dreaming? In the entire history of the team, I don’t know that they’ve ever had this “problem”. You could always count on the Rangers producing offense, but the pitching always failed them. Many people used to say the pitchers wore down more quickly and couldn’t survive the Texas heat over the course of an entire summer. However, this year’s team, possibly for the first time ever in Rangers history, flipped the script. Have the Rangers ever carried a top pitching staff into the playoffs that was this deep? I don’t know that they have. That’s what makes this year’s team so intriguing. I would love to see what these pitchers can do in the playoffs, especially deGrom given all he’s fought through to get back to this point. If the offense can do just enough to get them into the playoffs or catch fire at the right time, there’s reason to believe this Rangers team could make another run. They simply have to get there first.

What’s Next

With the Rangers now heading into a weekend series against the Toronto Blue Jays (Friday, August 15), it’s time for a reset. They’ll need stronger pitching, more timely offense, and better late-game execution to keep playoff hopes alive.

Spoiler Alert:

If you haven’t watched Friday night’s game between the Blue Jays and Rangers, the score is posted below. The main article is over, so you’re safe to press the back button or exit now if you don’t want to know the score.

Rangers (TEX) @ Blue Jays (TOR) on Friday, Aug 15, 2025 at 6:07PM CST. Final score: TEX 5 – TOR 6

After Friday night’s result, the Rangers dropped one game below .500. Here’s hoping the weeks ahead provide better results.
