The Super Mario Galaxy Movie – New Trailers

We cannot contain our excitement for the next Mario movie! The first movie was really fun and a massive hit. As soon as it finished we started discussing what the next movie might have in it. Like a lot of people, we thought they might take some kind of sequential approach similar to the game order. Given the Easter egg at the end of the first movie, we were thinking they might bundle Mario 2 and 3 and move on to Super Mario World for the Super Nintendo after that. We were not ready for the game they chose. When Nintendo recently posted the first trailer for the new movie revealing that they picked Super Mario Galaxy as the setting for the second movie, we were beyond excited!

Super Mario Galaxy is one of the best, most memorable games we have ever played. Many people out there probably feel the same way. Released for the Wii in 2007, the game sold about 12.8 million copies ranking it as about the 6^th best-selling Mario game of all-time. All these years later, the gameplay still stands out in our minds as one of the most unique experiences we’ve ever had in gaming. We still have not played anything like it. The game is definitely out of this world, and we expect the movie to be also!

One of the defining features that made the gameplay so unique is Super Mario Galaxy’s gravity mechanics. The game introduced spherical planets, where Mario could walk around them as if gravity pulled him toward the center. This unique design allowed for some of the most creative level design and gameplay you will ever see.

It is considered one of the best games of all time, has a 97/100 score on Metacritic, and won numerous “Game of the Year” awards in 2007.

The soundtrack is also beloved and one of the most beautiful pieces of video game music you will ever hear. Hearing familiar themes from the game in the trailer gives us hope that they will include as much music from the game in the movie as possible, even though time constraints place understandable limitations on them.

The game features 42 different galaxies, each made up of smaller planets or spherical environments. Each galaxy has a “grand star” that Mario needs to collect, often after completing a series of challenges. Some galaxies feature unique themes like fire, ice, or even ghostly elements. Obviously, the movie won’t have time to cover all of that, but it will hopefully include the more iconic, memorable locations and events.

We’ve been trying to talk other people into playing this game with us before the movie releases just as a fun refresher. If you’ve never played the game before, we definitely recommend checking it out! You should be able to find a used or pre-owned copy at a decent price. The game takes about 18 – 20 hours to beat, possibly up to 40 if you decide to play through it again as Luigi.

We haven’t even mentioned the company making these films, Illumination. You know them as the people that make the Despicable Me movies that have the minions people love so much. They did an incredible job with the first movie, and we cannot wait to see what they come up with for the second one! Just when we thought they couldn’t make a more beautiful movie than the first Mario movie, then the trailers for the second one start to appear and it looks even more beautiful than the first. That studio does amazing work! They are really at the top of their game, pun intended.

One last thing we got stupid excited for was the appearance of Rosalina! We got to see her for the first time and she looks amazing! In the game she is the guardian of the Comet Observatory and the one that guides Mario throughout the adventure. However, she also has a lot of fans that know her from another little game you might have heard about called, Mario Kart Wii. That game came out about a year later in 2008, and it remains as popular as ever. To this day many people still play it, including us nearly 20 years later. That game will also be remembered as one of the greatest games ever, just like Super Mario Galaxy. Rosalina is a playable character, a racer, in Mario Kart that many people love to race with. So, a lot of people are going to be excited to see her in this movie, similar to their excitement about seeing Princess Peach in the first movie.

The fact that we made it this far without even mentioning Bowser Jr. yet shows just how much we have to look forward to from this movie. Bowser Jr. is flat out cool and he looks incredible in the trailer! As a person that considers myself an artist, I’ve always been drawn to Bowser Jr. (pun intended), because his paint brush and style are so cool! He’s just a really cool character.

We could not be more hyped for this movie! The Super Mario Galaxy movie is supposed to land in theaters April 2026 and we cannot wait!
