The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Review

Lone Star Studios loves The Super Mario Galaxy movie and you will too! This movie is already breaking Box Office records, and on pace to get close to or pass the first movie’s numbers. Here is our review of the movie, no spoilers, we promise. It’s been three years since Illumination and Nintendo combined forces to create the best Mario movie ever made at the time. Now, following the astronomical $1.36 billion success of the first film, we’re finally blasting off into the sequel. The second movie appears just as capable as the first movie of eclipsing the $1 billion mark.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie officially hit theaters on April 1, 2026, and we can safely say: hold onto your Lumas! It’s a wild, gravity-defying ride that aims for the stars and reaches them. You will have a blast going to see this movie! There is so much to love; it’s hard to know where to start. If you grew up playing Mario with a Nintendo in your house, just hand them your money now, because you will absolutely love this movie! If you have kids, your kids will love this movie also.

We will not be surprised at all if many kids want to see the movie multiple times before it leaves theaters. In fact, we saw it the first week it opened and there was a group of kids in the theater, and one kid made it very clear that they had already seen the movie and they were there to see it a second time in the first week of opening! After seeing the movie, we can definitely imagine wanting to see it a few more times before it leaves theaters, it’s that good! In fact, it’s the first movie we’ve physically gone to in years, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see it bring a lot of other people out of their shells in a similar way.

A Visual Feast That Defies Gravity

If you thought the Mushroom Kingdom looked good in 2023, the cosmic scale of this sequel will make your jaw drop. The animation team at Illumination has clearly been working overtime. The way the film handles spherical gravity and the transition between tiny planetoids is nothing short of a technical marvel.

The colors are more vibrant, the lighting in deep space is moody yet magical, and the action sequences are much more dynamic than the original.

Cuteness Overload

If you love cute things, you will love this movie! Without saying too much, the image at the top of this article is just one of the moments in the movie that are likely to prompt a spontaneous “cuteness overload” squeal out of the females in your family, or just anybody in general. I love all of the things they did with one of my favorite characters in this movie! Hilarious! You’re not ready for it, I assure you.

The Soundtrack

The score is heavily infused with sweeping, orchestral arrangements of the original Super Mario Galaxy themes. We love the music in the games, and having the opportunity to hear familiar tunes coming from the theater speakers brought us pure delight. It’s a treat for the ears you simply cannot pass up.

Great Story Decisions

One concern we had prior to seeing the movie was whether the movie would make sense or contain spoilers for people that had not played the games. We’re happy to report that the movie does not contain any spoilers for the games. Watching and enjoying the movie will not spoil the games for you, and likewise, playing the games will not spoil the movie. Playing the games before watching the movie might make some characters and locations a bit more familiar to you, but it’s definitely not necessary for understanding the film. If anything, the film will likely just make you want to play the games even more.

Collectibles

This movie had collectible popcorn buckets in theaters while supplies lasted, but don’t be surprised if you cannot get one at this point. The theater we went to completely sold out of every popcorn bucket they had. We guess the only option you have left is to try to get one online.

Summary

Some websites are suggesting that this movie already recovered what it cost to make it, which means everything they make going forward is essentially profit. What’s amazing about that is the fact that the movie hasn’t even been released in Japan yet, and won’t open there until later this month on or around April 24th, incredible! Whether you’re a die-hard fan who has 100% completed the original Wii game or a parent just looking for a fun family afternoon, this is the blockbuster of the year for you! It truly has everything you could ever want in a film, an absolute delight from beginning to end! So, when you hear somebody in the family say they want to go see The Super Mario Galaxy movie, there’s only one thing to say, “Let’s-A-Go”!

We give it 7/7 Stars, it’s perfect!
