Star Fox

Blast Off Into Star Fox for Nintendo Switch 2

by | Aug 7, 2026

Lock On, Fox McCloud! Star Fox Has Officially Blasted Onto the Nintendo Switch 2!

Check your G-diffusers and sound the alarm across the Lylat System, everyone’s favorite space-faring mercenary crew is back! Released on June 25, 2026, Nintendo and developer Velan Studios unleashed Star Fox exclusively for the brand-new Nintendo Switch 2!

This isn’t just another routine patrol; it’s a full-throttle, modern reimagining of the legendary Star Fox 64 experience, complete with jaw-dropping visuals, expanded story beats, and thrilling new ways to fly, drive, and dive into battle! The Star Fox most people remember is likely the original Super Nintendo game. We missed the Nintendo 64 version of the game entirely. So, we’re excited to have the opportunity to play what feels like an entirely fresh, new take on the series, because to us it is.

What Makes This Mission So Special?

Whether you’re soaring through the fiery skies of Corneria in an Arwing, crushing ground forces in the Landmaster, or diving deep underwater in the Blue-Marine, this reboot takes everything you loved about the classic 90’s dogfighting and cranks it up to modern cinematic scale! Here is what’s waiting for you in the cockpit.

Star Fox has been given a stunning visual overhaul! Explosions pop off the screen, smoke and debris cloud the horizon, and dynamic weather like freezing snow on Fichina literally sticks to your screen before melting away!

The game also provides mouse control and motion support enabling players to aim with pinpoint precision using the Switch 2 Joy-Con’s new mouse-aiming feature in an intense first-person cockpit view!

The Campaign has been expanded and new lore has been added. You will experience new cinematic cutscenes that dive deeper into the tragic betrayal of James McCloud and the growing camaraderie of the team.

A really cool, fun new feature is the Face-Filter GameChat Integration. Similar to the funny 3D head filters you can add during FaceTime calls, Star Fox provides players that are playing online the opportunity to actually look like and embody the character they’re playing. You’re sure to have endless fun with your friends online using camera filters that overlay Fox’s ears, Wolf’s eyepatch, or Falco’s beak directly onto your video feed during multiplayer matches! That’s the first time we’ve ever seen a feature like that in a game, and it’s really cool!

Mission Briefing & Quick Specs

Another thing we love about this game is that a single playthrough of Star Fox on the Nintendo Switch 2 takes about 1 to 1.5 hours to reach the end credits. That makes it really accessible for new or beginner players to jump right in and have fun without feeling overwhelmed.

However, because the game follows the classic branching-path structure of Star Fox 64, a single run only shows you 7 of the game’s 15 planets. To see everything the remake offers, expected playtimes break down as follows:

Single Run (Main Story): ~1 hour (6–7 levels on a single path from Corneria to Venom).

All Branching Routes & Prologue: 3 to 5 hours (playing through all Easy, Medium, and Hard path variations, as well as the new James McCloud prologue mission).

100% Completionist: 8 to 12 hours (earning Gold Medals on every stage, unlocking Expert Mode, and hitting top high scores across all routes).

Why It’s Built for Replayability

Like its 1997 predecessor, the game is designed as an arcade-style experience meant to be replayed repeatedly rather than completed in one long sitting. Hitting specific objectives within a mission, such as rescuing Slippy or destroying a boss before a timer expires unlocks “Secret” or “Hard” path exits on the Lylat System map, steering your Arwing toward entirely different planets on your next stage.

8 to 12 hours might sound like a long time, but it’s not that long compared to other modern video games that often take 40+ hours to beat. In fact, we think of it as a sweet spot, because some of our all-time favorite games have taken about that long to beat. Some people feel like it’s too short, but for us it’s always been just right. Back when game rentals were still a thing, it would allow us to beat a game in one rental, and that always provided a very satisfying feeling.

Another thing we feel satisfied about is the price. Star Fox for the Nintendo Switch 2 costs $49.99 USD digitally on the Nintendo eShop. That’s a very reasonable price by today’s standards. Anytime we see a price that remotely resembles what games used to cost 10-20 years ago before the average game price rose to about $60-$100, we’re happy!

If you prefer a physical game card, standard retail MSRP is $59.99 USD, though major retailers like Walmart and Amazon frequently discount physical copies to match the $49.99 USD digital price tag. That’s not guaranteed or a promise though, so you’ll have to see what you can find online.

Overall, we think Star Fox for the Nintendo Switch 2 is one of the best games you can buy if you have a Switch 2, you just got one, or you’re planning on getting one soon! It looks like an absolute blast, and we look forward to joining Fox McCloud and his unforgettable band of pilots in space real soon!
